BAMSL’s 2021-22 President Bob Tomaso, with approval from the BAMSL Executive Committee and the BAMSL Board of Governors, announced at the 2022 Law Day celebration that the annual Distinguished Lawyer Award will be renamed the Hon. E. Richard Webber Distinguished Lawyer Award.

Judge Webber is the Senior District Judge for the United States District Court, Eastern District.

“Judge Webber lives the ideals we hold as a bar association,” Tomaso said. “He is always civil, polite, and gracious, while still being strong. Few can match how much he cares about the public he serves, as evidenced by the fact that he offers to meet with convicted criminals he has sentenced after they are released from prison to see if he can help them avoid future incarceration.”

The Distinguished Lawyer Award is the highest honor given by BAMSL. It is given annually to a lawyer who has made a great and lasting contribution to the St. Louis region in the area of law and community service, has motivated other lawyers to work in the public interest, and who exemplifies lawyers as good citizens contributing significantly to the community.

Tomaso chose three honorees - James Bennett, Robert Blitz and Edward L. Dowd, Jr. - to receive the Distinguished Lawyer Award for their service during his bar year. Tomaso said the trio was chosen for their work in securing a huge financial settlement in the lawsuit against the Rams and the NFL that resulted in a significant return for the region.
