Free Legal Answers - Missouri | Illinois | Other States

ABA Free Legal Answers program logo

Free Legal Answers is a virtual legal advice clinic. Qualifying users post their civil legal question to their state's website. Users will then be emailed when their question receives a response. Attorney volunteers, who must be authorized to provide pro bono assistance in their state, log in to the website, select questions to answer, and provide legal information and advice. Volunteer attorneys will not answer criminal law questions.

 

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Missouri

ACLU Missouri The ACLU of Missouri is a public-interest law firm that principally addresses issues arising only in Missouri that involve challenges to a government law, policy or practice affecting the constitutional rights — that is, the civil liberties and civil rights — of a significant number of people. Almost all of our cases involve constitutional issues, and because the United States Constitution and Missouri Constitution protect only against unlawful government action, we rarely take on disputes involving private companies.

 

ArchCity Defenders

ArchCity DefendersArchCity Defenders (ACD) is a 501(c)3 non-profit civil rights law firm providing holistic legal advocacy and combating the criminalization of poverty and state violence against poor people and people of color. ACD uses direct services, impact litigation, and policy and media advocacy as its primary tools to promote justice, protect civil and human rights, and bring about systemic change on behalf of the poor and communities of color directly impacted by the abuses of the legal system.

St. Francis Community Services - Catholic Legal Assistance Ministry

St. Francis Community ServicesCatholic Legal Assistance Ministry, a program of St. Francis Community Services, has provided civil legal aid to the St. Louis metropolitan area and surrounding counties for more than thirty years. Annually, we provide legal aid in over 1,500 cases in the areas of immigration law, veterans advocacy, family and guardianship law, housing crisis cases, and municipal court cases. We serve clients at 150% of the Federal Poverty Level or less.

 

Crime Victim Center

Crime Victim CenterCrime Victim Center is the oldest victim service agency in the country and celebrated its 50th year in 2022. CVC provided many services to crime victims, but in particular, its legal program specializes in trauma-informed legal representation for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. CVC represents survivors of those crimes in Order of Protection hearings free of charge.

 

St. Louis Bankruptcy Pro Se Assistance Program

The Pro Se Assistance Program (PSAP) is a free legal clinic designed to help individuals without an attorney to answer legal questions about bankruptcy, including how bankruptcy may be used to help prevent foreclosure. The PSAP provides debtors with an opportunity to meet with a volunteer private attorney for a free 30-minute consultation.

St. Louis Federal Court Legal Advice Clinic

The Federal Court Legal Advice Clinic ("Clinic") is a free legal clinic designed to help individuals without an attorney get answers to legal questions about filing a civil case in the federal district court. The clinic provides self-represented (a.k.a, pro se) litigants with an opportunity to meet with a volunteer private attorney for a free 30-minute consultation.

 

Immigrant Power of Attorney Workshops

These workshops, coordinated by Catholic Legal Assistance Ministry, M.I.C.A. Project, and Missouri Immigrant and Refugee Advocates, are targeted to members of the immigrant community, and are spaces where people will be able to work with a volunteer attorney to complete a Power of Attorney form to designate someone to take care of their property or care for their children if, for some reason, they are unable to do so.

 

The Kaufman Fund Veterans Legal Referral Program

We have partnered with support agencies and attorneys willing to assist veterans needing legal assistance in the locations described above.

 

Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation

Land of Lincoln Legal AidLand of Lincoln provides free civil legal services to eligible low-income residents and seniors in 65 counties in Central and Southern Illinois. We handle only certain kinds of civil cases. The kind of help we provide ranges from telephone advice or brief service, to representation in court or at administrative hearings.

 

Legal Advocates for Abused Women (LAAW)

Legal Advocates for Abused WomenThe Legal Advocates for Abused Women (LAAW) program provides the only domestic violence program that partners with law enforcement and criminal court systems to break the cycle of violence at the earliest possible stage. LAAW serves St. Louis City and the counties of St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Franklin.

 

Legal Services of Eastern Missouri (LSEM)

Legal Services of Eastern MissouriLegal Services of Eastern Missouri provides free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and the elderly in 21 counties of eastern Missouri.

 

Metropolitan St. Louis Equal Housing & Opportunity Council

EHOC is the only private, not-for-profit fair housing enforcement agency working to end illegal housing discrimination in the Metropolitan St. Louis area. EHOC operates throughout Missouri and Illinois, and fights illegal housing discrimination through education and outreach, counseling, investigations, and enforcement.

 

Military Legal Assistance Team

The Missouri Attorney General’s Military Legal Assistance Team (MLAT) is a statewide program bringing together private attorneys to provide pro bono legal representation and education to our military communities.

The MLAT provides pro bono legal assistance to servicemembers and veterans in Missouri for qualifying legal matters. The program also offers educational opportunities for Missouri servicemembers, veterans, and businesses. The MLAT is Missouri's first statewide attorney general-led program offering our military communities access to pro bono civil legal services.

 

New Covenant Legal Services

New Covenant Legal Services (NCLS) provides legal services to individuals on fixed and limited incomes who cannot afford private legal counsel. Cases include: consumer fraud, debt collections actions, expungements, landlord/tenant issues, payday loan issues, and racial discrimination.

 

St. Louis Survivors Legal Support

The mission of St. Louis Survivors Legal Support (SLSLS) is to provide zealous advocacy and meaningful access to justice for victims of intimate partner violence and their children, and to educate the St. Louis community about the legal process and resources for those seeking protection. SLSLS helps victims get effective legal relief in the form of thorough and enforceable Orders of Protection and other companion orders.

Vivent Health (formerly, Saint Louis Effort for AIDS) has been at the forefront of the fight against HIV since the earliest days of the epidemic. The Vivent Health HIV Medical Home delivers the best health outcomes for patients by providing comprehensive care — including legal services.
