Hon. Richard B. Teitelman Memorial St. Louis Pro Bono Challenge

In 2017, BAMSL partnered with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri to implement this exciting program to encourage and support pro bono legal services, and to publicly recognize those lawyers and law firms who step up to the Challenge. Thanks to the efforts of the 19 participating firms, in the 2017 Challenge, 32,054 hours of pro bono legal work was provided to the St. Louis community.

The Challenge was renewed for 2018, and 22 firms pledged to complete an average minimum of 10 hours of pro bono work per full-time attorney per year. The Pro Bono Challenge Law Firms have reported a collective 29,836 hours of pro bono work to the St. Louis community for the first nine months of 2018. After the first three quarters of 2018, RCJ Law, LLC, Ruth Schneider, has a runaway lead with 214 hours.

St. Louis Attorneys Against Hunger

St. Louis Attorneys Against Hunger is an initiative of The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis with support from the Saint Louis Bar Foundation. The program unites lawyers and other legal professionals with the St. Louis community to fight against homelessness and hunger in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

One in every 6 individuals lives in poverty and struggles with hunger in the greater St. Louis region, including more than 173,000 children.

Motion for Kids

BAMSL, along with support from the St. Louis Blues, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Isaac Bruce Foundation, Saint Louis University and Delaware North, provides an annual holiday party for children impacted by the justice system. Motion for Kids partners with local support organizations to identify the children invited to attend the holiday party. Those children are matched up with sponsors from the St. Louis legal community (lawyers, judges, paralegals, office administrators, law students, legal secretaries, and their families). Each sponsor is asked to purchase and wrap two gifts (totaling $30) chosen from each child’s wish list. Gifts are distributed at the end of the party, to which the children and their caregivers are invited. Holiday party activities include: photos and autographs with sports figures and cheerleaders, arts and crafts stations, games, books, photos with Santa Claus, refreshments and live entertainment.

BAMSL Speaker Bureau

BAMSL's Speaker Bureau program consists of volunteer members who agree to participate in BAMSL's community outreach to schools, businesses, media and other civic organizations.

Call-A-Lawyer

On the third Tuesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., volunteer attorneys staff the telephones at KTVI-TV Fox 2 to answer a wide variety of legal questions from television viewers. This program brings a positive image to BAMSL and the legal profession, as it provides advice to callers or puts them in touch with the resources and programs already in place to assist them with their legal problems.

Read Across America

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program which takes place on or around March 2 that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday.

Each year, BAMSL arranges for lawyers and judges to visit grade school classrooms in the St. Louis Metropolitan area to read their favorite Dr. Seuss books.

Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition

As BAMSL's only statewide law-related education program, the Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition serves more than 600 students each year from more than 40 schools throughout Missouri and is supported by over 400 attorneys who volunteer as coaches, judges, and evaluators. The mock trials are structured like real courtroom trials and follow the same rules and procedures, so students learn first-hand how the legal system works and what role judges, lawyers, juries, and witnesses play in the court system. This increased understanding helps students develop a deeper appreciation for our justice system and the administration of justice. The competition also helps students develop and improve their public speaking and critical thinking skills.
