In the first two installments of this series, I identified challenges in navigating rapidly evolving Generative Artificial Intelligence (“GenAI”) technology. I suggested adoption of a long-term perspective and predicted that GenAI technology tools for legal will look very different in 18-24 months. Part 1. Next, I outlined some strategies to prepare yourself and your firm to leverage GenAI in practice:  the need for education about AI developments; reviewing contracts with current service providers, who will likely provide your first exposures to legal GenAI tools; designating a point person or committee to take the lead on legal GenAI issues, and performing a readiness assessment of firm data that might be accessed in your first GenAI use cases. In 1973 I graduated from the University of Iowa law school, passed the Bar, and began practicing law with a small general civil practice firm in Clayton Missouri. I cannot believe fifty years have passed and I am still practicing! I remember going downtown in 1973 to answer a docket navigating the dreaded Vandeventer overpass (one lane each way) in a car that for some reason did not have air conditioning. When I got to Court lawyers would announce to the Magistrate Judge “dwopc” (dismissed without prejudice plaintiff’s costs). Took me a while to figure that out. One of the many things I learned on the fly that was not addressed in law school.

The position of Term Law Clerk to the Honorable U.S. District Judge Audrey G. Fleissig is a full-time position. The position is located in St. Louis, MO. This position duration is subject to a term time limit. The term begins the Summer or Fall 2024.

GenAI stands out due to its wide public accessibility and its potential to profoundly influence the knowledge-based legal industry. In addition to boosting efficiency and productivity, GenAI’s new technological capabilities hold the promise of empowering lawyers to offer more precise and insightful guidance to their clients.

Since 1994, the Commercial Law Committee of the Missouri Bar, through a special selection subcommittee consisting of past recipients and attorneys representing different geographical areas throughout the state in a variety of practice sizes, each year presents the Roser award to an attorney who manifests the highest standard of excellence in bankruptcy practice, who contributes distinctively to the development and appreciation of bankruptcy law, and who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of bankruptcy practice or administration.  The award is named in honor of the late Michael R. Roser, a prominent Kansas City bankruptcy lawyer.
