Technology won't replace lawyers…but it will replace lawyers who don't use it.

The pace of legal innovation has accelerated exponentially in the past three years and constantly provides new opportunities for us to think differently about how we practice law. The Innovation and Technology in the Legal Profession Committee strives to provide a forum to explore these issues.

"Innovation" can be defined simply as the introduction of something new; a new thing or a new method of doing something. While technology is a major engine for change, innovation also includes things like finding new ways of managing our practices through process improvements or leveraging people and teams differently.

In the legal industry, the purpose of innovation is to add value to our practices and the services we provide to the clients or organizations we support. In business, innovation is a driving force behind entrepreneurship and the creation of new companies. Innovation is not only for big firms, and it doesn't have to be expensive.

As the chair of this committee, I hope to share my insights as someone who has practiced law for more than 25 years and has seen how innovation shapes our industry from the perspectives of law firms, corporate legal departments and the government—but my experience is limited! We need diverse viewpoints to properly serve BAMSL's broad membership.

Some ideas discussed at the January 31 committee meeting included:

  • Technology information sessions
  • Software/service demonstrations
  • Workshops on process improvement, technology training for staff and lawyers
  • Presentations on how technology impacts access to justice
  • CLE opportunities

The next committee meeting will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, March 15, 12-1 p.m.
