Article Submission +
Thank you for your interest in contributing a lead article to The St. Louis Law Journal. We welcome thoughtful, well-developed submissions that provide meaningful guidance, analysis, and insight for practicing attorneys.
To submit your article, please email your manuscript (Word or PDF) along with your short biography to:
When emailing your submission, please include:
- Your full article (600–2,400 words)
- Any endnotes or citations
- A short biography (firm, education, relevant experience)
- Your preferred byline as it should appear in print
- A headshot (optional — we can also arrange photography)
After your article is received, our editorial team will review your manuscript, confirm receipt, and coordinate next steps such as editing, photography, and publication timeline.
1. Length of Article +
Your article, including footnotes, should be no less than 600 words and not exceed 2,400 words.
2. Content of Article +
The content of the article is solely in your discretion, subject only to the general topic and subject upon which you have graciously agreed to write. Keep in mind that your primary audience is the practicing lawyer, who may or may not be familiar with the general field of law, or the particular topic, that is the subject of your article.
3. Rules of Citation +
We follow the “Uniform System of Citation” which we all know as The Bluebook. Your citations will be checked for uniformity and accuracy but we anticipate that your basic form will be adequate. Case names should be in italics. Contrary to what the Bluebook may otherwise say, Missouri cases, statutes and rules should be cited as follows:
- Hook v. Crook, 145 S.W.3d 242 (Mo.App. E.D. 2016). (Always specify the district of the Court of Appeals)
- Hook v. Crook, 147 S.W.3d 300 (Mo. banc 2017).
- Section 407.405(3), RSMo (2007) (first reference); §407.405(3) (subsequent references)
- Supreme Court Rule 56.01 (first reference); Rule 56.01 (subsequent)
4. Spacing of Copy +
A. Double Space: Double space all copy. This leaves room for needed changes or instructions.
B. Paragraphs: Do not be stingy with your paragraphs. Long paragraphs are hard to read and discourage the reader.
C. Word Spacing: All sentences should only use one space when beginning.
5. Title and Byline +
Please give your article a title. We reserve the right to change the title; we will do our best to discuss this with you before changing it.
Please include a byline with your article. Multiple authors should be listed in alphabetical order unless one author has done a significant amount of work on the article relative to others. List your name(s) as you would like them to appear in print.
6. Footnotes +
Please prepare your footnotes as endnotes, that is, appearing at the end of the work rather than at the bottom of the page on which they appear.
7. Subheadings +
Subheads are used to break up copy, highlight important points, guide the reader, and catch the interest of a browser. They are not a requirement, but may be helpful. Use only as many words as necessary and leave double spacing around each subhead.
10. Biography +
Please include a short biography: your firm or law practice, your schools and degrees received, and any experience or committees relevant to the subject.
11. Photographs +
We will arrange to have photographs taken to appear with your article. Pre-existing headshots may be used if necessary. Authors of joint articles must be photographed together.
12. Copy Deadline +
Timely submission is essential for editing, layout, proofreading, and publication. Please submit your article on or before the deadline to avoid delays in publication.
13. Copyright +
All issues of The St. Louis Law Journal are copyrighted. Articles become the property of BAMSL upon submission. We freely consent to republication after publication. We cannot publish your article until we receive a signed copyright agreement.
14. Questions +
If you have questions or need assistance at any point in the process, please email barjournal@bamsl.org. We are happy to help.
