Settlement Agreement Ends Litigation Over St. Louis Taxation of Compensation Paid for Remote Work

On June 14, 2024, the Collector of Revenue and the City of St. Louis reached a settlement with the plaintiffs in Boles v. City of St. Louis, allowing persons who are nonresidents of the city of St. Louis to seek refunds for earnings tax paid on compensation for work performed or services rendered outside the City from 2020 through 2023. The settlement agreement concluded more than three years of contentious litigation between the Collector’s office and taxpayers regarding the taxation of “remote work” performed for employers that have physical locations within the City.
